In the 1890's, Sigmund Freud offered us the "subconscious" and "conscious" mind.
From birth, until about eight years old, our subconscious mind develops. It houses our beliefs, emotions, and perceptions of the world. It allows us to create patterns that assist in expectation and prediction. It is, essentially, our operating system. And it runs our lives.
Consequently, the subconscious mind and body are one and not mutually exclusive. The body mirrors what happens at the subconscious level. Physiological symptoms can arise when we continually repress powerful emotions. Consider too, that the body is a container with limited capacity. When mentally overloaded, bodily systems respond. Repressed emotion and stress suppress the immune system or lead to other physical issues. Repressed emotion or stress can manifest into symptoms the medical/pharmaceutical establishment call "autoimmune disorders".
Anxiety, chronic pain, restrictions (or powerful releases) in the gastrointestinal system, breathing constrictions, and chronic pressure or headaches are all documented symptoms of repressed emotion. Most of our health issues, studies show, can be attributed to repressed emotion and the subsequent body response to imprisoned energy. Imagine the concept of depression not being a disorder, but a symptom of repressed emotion. This offers some interesting possibilities outside of "living with it" or taking anti-depressants the rest of your life.

Alternatively, the conscious mind starts to devel0p around the age of nine and continues into our early twenties. It's part of the prefrontal cortex of the brain, responsible for critical thinking, problem solving, logic, decision making, and analysis. It's also a "filter" for the subconscious mind and can get in our way when we're trying to make elevated changes.
For example, the conscious mind knows that smoking is bad for us (logic) but the subconscious mind runs a "program" that desires safety, comfort, and pleasure (even if it is bad for us).
When the conscious and subconscious minds come into conflict, the subconscious mind always wins because it's part of the survival brain (limbic system). Understandably, internal conflicts often feel hopeless or demoralizing. Logic tells us it should be easy to make changes such as managing anxiety, or eating better, but the subconscious (beliefs and emotions) redirects and hijacks the logical effort.
